Occupational Therapy (O.T.) “Thandanani Style” What we do to keep busy and have purpose each day. CHORES- Learning to look after oneself and one’s home forms an important part of the rehabilitation process. Household chores, making the bed, keeping the bedroom tidy, being on time for the start of the day and meals, managing laundry are some of the daily chores. Washing and drying dishes. Floor cleaning, ablution maintenance, office cleaning, laundry, housekeeping of general areas, gardening. WORK- Everyone is encouraged to develop their skills by working. Some may be employed on a learnership basis in administrative/secretarial capacities, as drivers, kitchen assistants or gardeners, and earn a small wage for their efforts.  Some manage to find employment in the open market and continue to live at Thandanani and utilize our support system. Encouraging self employment in craft work earns a small income, develops business skills and gives a boost in self esteem. CLIMATE MEETINGS- These are regularly held on a wide range of topics. Talks on reducing smoking, developing good habits, art therapy, what is schizophrenia, what is Bipolar Mood disorder, compliance and medication. HIV, AID’s and self determination. OUTINGS- Since 2001, to encourage our residents to participate in society and to improve everyone’s social skills. We have organised at least 2 outings each year, and residents have the opportunity to enjoy the extras that make life more pleasurable. We have had picnics in the park, a sponsored visit to the Planetarium, caught the train and gone to the movies, zoo visits, visited Monte Casino Bird Park, visits to the Walter Sisulu Botanical gardens, visited the Everard Read Art gallery, a holiday to the Waterberg, and fishing trip to a local dam, plus outings to the local Wimpy. Without sponsorship much of this would not be possible. SKILLS DEVELOPMENT -  Computer literacy self-study classes are available. We encourage further studies at an NGO offering Computer Literacy courses. Weekly Art and Baking classes are enjoyed. Our woodwork Centre is a Centre of excellence. Residents are becoming skilled in the use of woodwork equipment. They earn a small income from the fruits of their labours.   SPORTS – We encourage everyone to keep fit and active. Regular morning exercises, walking, utilizing our gym, croquet, putt-putt, and hand tennis are on offer. We enjoy soccer against other NGO’s.   INDOOR GAMES - Snooker, Darts, Table Soccer, Drafts, Chess, Dominoes, Cards, Puzzle Making and Board games. OUTREACH –  We support other facilities with time, and anything extra we pass on. Recently we decided to pay it forward for Mental Health Month – and started in July 2014; we made educational toys for a children’s home in Ivory Park, with physical and intellectual disabilities. In 2015 we made more wooden educational toys for a children’s home in Eldorado Park and another in Orange Farm. In 2016 for Mandela Month we had a soup kitchen and fed homeless people in our community. We also visited an Old age home nearby, bringing our baked goods for a tea party.
